AI Cold Email Copywriting: The 17Signal Playbook
Separate Research From Writing
17Signal uses different models for different tasks. Account and campaign research can use a general model, while production email copy is pinned to Claude Sonnet 5. A draft still needs to pass the campaign's evidence and editorial checks before it is shown or sent.
---
Keep the Message Short
The copy policy targets 85–140 words for a first email and 35–85 words for a follow-up. These limits encourage one clear point instead of a long pitch. The exact message should still fit the recipient and the evidence available.
---
Avoid Empty Personalization
Phrases such as "I hope this email finds you well" or "just circling back" add little context. A stronger opening names a verifiable observation and connects it to the sender's offer without pretending to know the recipient's private priorities.
A three-point fit breakdown can help organize the offer: the practical mechanism, the expected operational benefit, and the friction or risk the buyer would need to consider. Quantified claims should have a source; if they do not, leave them out.
---
Ask for a Small Next Step
A first message can ask whether the recipient wants a short breakdown rather than immediately requesting calendar time. This is a writing choice, not a guaranteed conversion lift. Compare reply quality, opt-outs, and complaints against your previous campaigns before adopting it broadly.
